Hopetoun House is an impressive wedding venue on the outskirts of Edinburgh and one of my favourites, not just because you’ll find many of my photographs on their website but also because of the great photo opportunities to be had there.  That and the fact that I grew up nearby and spent many a happy summer playing in the grounds as a child.

With 6,500 acres of grounds, Hopetoun House is one of Scotland’s finest stately homes with a grand wooded drive from the shores of the Firth of Forth revealing revealing an imposing view of the impressive house in landscaped gardens.  The first view of the house is assured to impress your guests with a staircase in front of the main building, chapel building to the right and ballroom to the left with pillars and period architecture creating a wonderful impression.

As well as many options for church weddings nearby, Hopetoun features it’s own chapel as part of the main house meaning you can have both your ceremony and reception in the one place.  The chapel is a lovely room with plenty of space for guests and lots of room at the front for the wedding party and ceremony.  Guests enter by the north courtyard and exit onto the pillared, covered walkway to the front of the building which is an ideal setting for guests to throw confetti and makes one of the best photo opportunities I’ve come across.  The chapel looks great when completed with your flower arrangements that can be transferred to the reception area after the ceremony.

It’s an impressive spectacle to see the smartly dressed waiting staff standing by the pillars with silver trays of Champagne flutes welcoming your guests to the drinks reception.  During the summer guests are likely to enjoy their drinks outside the front of the building but can make use of the tapestry room and it’s bar if they’d like a seat or if the weather is not ideal.  The house makes an atmospheric and romantic backdrop for the reception and the steps to the front are an ideal spot for any group photographs and can easily accommodate a large group shot of the whole wedding party with minimal fuss.

For Bride & Groom portraits, the sculptured gardens, period architecture and green surroundings offer plenty of choice and variety in the immediate location that helps keep you away from guests for as little time as possible.  As an added bonus, the beach on the shores of the Forth is just a few minutes drive away and gives views of the Forth Road and Rail bridges and a completely different setting to take some quiet time away from guests to toast your marriage on your own.

Your wedding breakfast will be in the ballroom in the south wing of the house.  The ballroom is large, bright and decorated with tapestries and enormous fireplace.  It is easily large enough to hold the biggest wedding parties and the staged area for the band means your evening entertainment can be set up prior to dinner, reducing the time between dinner and dancing.  Catering is handled with unusually high standards by my favourites, Heritage Portfolio (click here) who not only provide excellent food but impressive french service bringing out your food with style and military like efficiency.

Staff from the house and Heritage Portfolio are friendly, experienced and knowledgable and will turn around the ballroom after the wedding breakfast to prepare it for the evening’s dancing.  Once again the ballroom comes into it’s own with enough space for band, dance floor and seating that encourages guests to remain in the main room, although the tapestry room bar is available for anyone looking for a quieter spot to chat. During the summer guests will often spill out of door to the front of the house which looks great when floodlit as the sun sets and the sky darkens to a deep blue.

Hopetoun also offers accommodation nearby for both Bride & Groom as well as family.  See the details by clicking here.

 Summary

Stately home grandeur at an architecturally impressive location in landscaped gardens less than a half hour from Edinburgh with room for large wedding parties and boasting it’s own chapel and ballroom.  A wedding venue that has the wow factor and guarantees excellent service and ticks just about every box you can think of.
